Olusegun Akinola


Sensei Olusegun Akinola was born in Lagos Nigeria to the family of Brigadier-General and Mrs S.B Akinola. His father was former Director of Military Intelligence and his mother a retired principal.

Sensei Olusegun Akinola is a 6th degree black belt and originally took his Dan Gradings with the renowned late Sensei Enoeda (9th Dan). He also has a Master of Arts Degree in Fine Art from the University of East London.

Sensei Akinola is undoubtedly the best all round karate-ka Nigeria has produced.
He started karate 30 years ago at the All Saints Anglican Church Yaba Karate Club with Dipo Oyemaja and later became a student of the legendary instructor Alfred Ohimain at the University of Lagos Karate Club. Segun was 8 times National Champion and former Captain and Coach of the Nigerian National team. His competition and coaching career took him to countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Latin America, winning many medals for the country. He was gold medallist at the International Shotokan Karate Federation Goodwill Games in Philadelphia, U.S.A, in 2001.

While studying and living in the United Kingdom, Sensei Akinola was Chief Instructor of the London Karate Academy an affiliate of Shotokan Karate England (SKE) with clubs in Southgate and New Barnet. He also taught at the SKE London clubs in Enfield, Wanstead, Walthamstow, Edmonton and Forest. Sensei Akinola coached the Shotokan Karate England Competition Squad and led the team to victorious outings. He remains close friends with Sensei Rod Butler head of the SKE.

In 2006, Sensei Akinola was selected by the president of UFAK Zone 3 Mr Mohammed Paraiso as the best referee to represent the Zone at the referee exams of the World Karate Federation in Tampere Finland. He passed and attained the rank of Kata Judge "B". He later went to write the next exam level in Tokyo, Japan 2008 and was graded Kata Judge "A" which is the highest level attainable by a World Judge (The WKF is the only organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee). He is also a Union of African Federation (UFAK) Grade "A" referee which he acheived in Durban, South Africa and was a member of the planning committee for the Karate Tournament at the All Africa Games  in Algeria in 2007. He is currently the Chief Referee of the Karate Federation of Nigeria. Sensei Akinola is a well sought after instructor who gives courses to national teams.BassaiSho

He is the Technical Director of the Nigerian Association of Shotokan Karate (NASK) one of the leading karate associations in Nigeria.

His hobbies are playing the piano and drawing. Sensei Akinola is married with children. He is an insured instructor and is CRB certified.
